Abstract

In 1987, nitric oxide became a new and versatile mediator produced
by the endothelium. Although its physiological role was mainly focused on vascular
tone control, several lines of evidences have confirmed key roles in vascular
homeostasis such as its anti adherence, anti proliferative and anti
inflammatory properties. Although a simplistic view about its synthesis and
regulation was generalized from the very beginning, very convincing knowledge
has recently increased about how complex this pathway is and how obsoletes
many of the initial considerations are.
