Abstract

Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease, characterized by hyperplasia, inflammatory infiltration and abnormal differentiation of epidermal keratinocytes in the skin with predominance of activated T lymphocytes of CD4 and CD8 phenotypes. The for t1 monoclonal antibody anti CD6 is a murine IgG 2a mAb recognizing a different epitope compared to the other anti CD, mAb. Calcipotriol is a vitamin D3 analogue, effective for the induction of differentiation and inhibition of proliferation of human keratinocyte cultures and modulates the immune responses of T lymphocytes, constituting a safe and effective treatment for chronic plaque psoriasis. Now it compares
for t1 mAb and Calcipotriol treatments in psoriasis, their immunomodulating effects as well as the histological changes induced by them in psoriatic lesions. This was a prospective randomized double-blind trial scheduled in two groups of fourteen patients each one receiving either the Calcipotriol ointment or for t1 mAb. The topical therapeutic formulation (jelly and Calcipotriol) was applied daily, twice a day during 21 d. Histological analysis of biopsies from cutaneous lesions were performed at the beggining and finishing the treatment by one morphometric analyses digital imaging procedures. The treatment with for t, showed an improvement of the patients'
skin morphology as a result of noticeable decrease in thickness of the epidermis. Additionally, all the patients treated with for t1 showed an improvement as a result of the decrease in infiltrating lymphoid cells in the epidermis and epidermis-dermis union. Nevertheless, this indication of effectiveness in treatment for t1 mAb should be corroborated in a larger number of patients.
