Abstract

Within hearing loss, unilateral hearing loss has been relatively little studied. In contrast, there is much more
information regarding bilateral hearing losses which, due to their magnitude, or because they appear at very early
stages of development, have much more serious implications. In recent years, however, studies have been published showing slight delays in linguistic and cognitive development
in patients with unilateral losses. Up to now this type of alterations, of a very discreet nature, have only been
evidenced in patients with unilateral congenital losses. The possible presence of functional changes of some kind
in patients with acquired unilateral auditory lesions remains to be demonstrated. For this, very sensitive
evaluation techniques are required, among which event-related potentials (ERP) and single-photon emission brain
tomography (SPECT) are valid alternatives.
