Abstract

Exploratory behavior, acquisition and retention in a step through passive avoidance learning model wcre analyzed in 240 albino rats of both sexes frorn 11 to 40 days old. For statistical analysis animals were classified according to age and weight. In 120 anima1s, focal epileptic activity was produccd by application of penicillin G sodium crystals over right or left occipital cortices, which produced localized epileptic discharges only. All anirnals below 15 days old and sorne older ones (most of them epileptics) did not perform the expected exploratory initial behavior for the learning model. Alterations of learning acquisition and retention in cpileptic animals seemed to be related to age and \.veight. More severe modificatiOns were observed in lower weight rats betwecn eleven to thirty days old. Lo\.v and high \.Veight control animals did not show statistical differences in exploratory behavior, learning and retention tests (from 11-to 35 days old).
