Abstract

Analysis of the morphologic characteristics of its sperm is required in selecting an animal for use in artificial insemination. In recent years, this technique has been very useful in the determination of pathologies of the genital tract, and its application is important in comparing this index with those obtained in healthy animals. Morphology is given for 130 artificial insemination bulls belonging to the Holstein, Cebú, Brown Swiss, South Devon, Charolaise, Shorthorn, Hereford, Criollo and F-1 (Holstein-Cebú) breeds, between 2 to 11 years old, stabled at 20 +- 1O environmental temperature. This study was carried out` with semen smears stained with carbolfuschin and in samples conserved in buffer formol-saline for phase contrast microscopy. Total percentages are the following: 6 .13 head pathology, 6 .23 tail pathology, 2 .23 acrosome pathology, 1 .32 middle piece pathology,4.29 proximal citoplasmatic drop, 4.23 distal citoplasmatic drop, present in tables. These results are discussed and compared with those of other authors.
