Abstract

The method of Castellanos and Edquist (1971) for the determination of testosterone in blood was employed to study, the levels of this hormone in the peripheral blood of boars and bulls of different ages, as well as its values, in the spermatic vein of the latter. The following values were detected in normal' bulls of the Sweden Red and White breed: 6.2 ng/ml in animals from 1 to 30, days old; 4 .9 ng/ml in animals 31 to 60 days old; 6 .5 ng/ml in those from 61 to 90 days of age; 9 .3 ng/ml in the group from 91 to 360 days; and 6.3 ng/m1" in bulls older than 360 days. In normal boars of the Sweden Landrace breed; the value found in peripheral blood was 5 .4 ng/ml. In castrated boars the value was 0.3 ng/ml which differs significantly from the normal values. The mean value of testosterone in blood from the spermatic vein of four boars was 96 ng/ml, which is also significantly different from the peripheral normal values.
