Abstract

During pregnancy, the most common medical complication is urinary tract infections (UTI). Diagnosis of UTI is made through urine culture. Objective: To characterize the antimicrobial profile of uropathogens isolated from January 2020 to December 2021 in the pregnant population affiliated with a private insurer in Bogotá. Materials and methods: An observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out. Records of positive urine cultures for a single pathogen with automated counting >105 CFU were obtained with the PREVI Isola system. For the identification and determination of the susceptibility profile, the automated MALDI TOF VITEK MS and VITEK 2XL system (BioMérieux) was used. Descriptive statistics are included for the quantitative variable and frequency distributions for the qualitative variables. Results: The study population included 3394 patients, between 14 and 50 years old. 4786 isolates were analyzed. Gram-negative bacteria constituted 77.3%, and Gram-positive bacteria accounted for 22.7%. The most frequently identified microorganism was Escherichia coli in 65.9% of cases followed by Streptococcus agalactiae with 9.2%. Resistance to ampicillin was 37.3% and to quinolones 27.8 and 26.1% respectively. Our study documents the presence of strains producing extended-spectrum beta-lactamases. The microbiological results obtained in our study indicate that the antibiotics that could be used empirically for the treatment of UTI in our mentioned population are ceftriaxone, nitrofurantoin, gentamicin and amikacin for E. coli and ampicillin for S. agalactiae
