Abstract
The work is based on a Peruvian species called “sacha inchi” (Plukenetia volubilis L.), which provides an oil with a high content of omega – 3 (µ - linolenic) and especially provides an adequate proportion of linoleic/µ - linolenic fatty acids. Objective: To evaluate the effect of Plukenetia volubilis L. (sacha inchi) oil in patients with hypercholesterolemia at the I Naylamp - Essalud hospital in Chiclayo. Methodology: Experimental study with a comparative randomized parallel design in which 50 patients with Hypercholesterolemia participated, of which 25 were the experimental group and 25 were the control group, homogeneous groups, with similar clinical characteristics, baseline characteristics and use of medications, taking into account that no patient had a history of coronary heart disease and they also signed the informed consent to be considered in the study. The data collection was recorded in forms prepared by the researcher, the sample collection was carried out and processed in the laboratory of the Naylamp hospital. The results were analyzed using the Student t test for independent samples with a confidence level of p < 0.05. Ethical and rigorous criteria were considered. Results: After 12 weeks of treatment with intake of 20 ml/day of Sacha Inchi oil and when comparing the values of the experimental group that consumed Saccha Inchi Oil and the control group that only followed the diet and exercise recommendations according to ATP III it was observed that total cholesterol levels in the experimental group decreased below the desirable limit values. Conclusions: Daily intake of 20ml/day of Plukenetia volubilis L. (sacha inchi) oil decreased total cholesterol levels in patients with hypercholesterolemia, improving their quality of life.
