Abstract

The objectives of the paper were to evaluate the microbial prevalence of indoor environment of the Photo
library of the National Archives of the Republic of Cuba, to determine some of the physiological features of fungal isolates
in order to evaluate their potential for biodeterioration, as well as to analyze the pathogenic characteristics of microorganisms
isolated more frequently using the literature as basic. A sedimentation method was used for the microbiological
sampling of air. Petri dishes with appropriate selective culture media were used to isolate fungi and bacteria. They were
placed at 1.5 m from the floor. The cellulolytic activity and the production of acids and pigments of the fungal isolated
were qualitatively determined. The fungal concentration was unchanged compared with 2004, while the bacteria decreased
significantly. The predominant fungal genus in the air was Cladosporium while the prevalent bacterial isolated was Gram
positive. It was shown that the fungal isolated genera showed cellulolytic activity and produced acid and pigments, which
is a high risk of biodeterioration for documentary heritage. Among Gram positive bacteria, strains of Staphylococcus,
Streptococcus, Streptomyces and Bacillus were identified while strains of Serratia marcenscens, Serratia sp., Enterobacter
agglomerans, Beijerinckia sp., Azotobacter sp., Acinetobacter sp. and Pseudomonas sp. were identified among bacteria
Gram negative. Most fungal and bacterial genera isolated are potentially pathogenic agents
