Abstract

The use of bioethanol as a fuel is an alternative to minimize the negative consequences on environment, due
to its contributes to the reduction of the greenhouse effect. Textile wastes are studied as alternative for ethanol production.
Textile wastes, pre-treated [NaOH 12 % (w/v), 0 °C, 3 h] (TEP) and un-pretreated (TESP and TDSP), were subjected
to simultaneous saccharification and fermentation processes (SSF) (37 °C, 145 r/min, pH 4.8-5). For this process, the
transformation rate of glucose to ethanol, using Saccharomyces cerevisiae CCUG 53310, was higher than the transformation
rate of cellulose to glucose using enzymes. Maximum ethanol concentration was 10.38 g/L at 48 h for the pretreated
material meanwhile for the untreated materials (TESP and TDSP) ethanol concentration was 5.23 and 4.32 g/L at 120 h,
respectively. It was observed that at 12 h the yield practically stayed constant for all materials; therefore an operation
time above 72 h would not be advisable. The yields obtained at 72 h were 36.08 % for the pretreated material, and 15.36
and 17.25 %, for the untreated materials respectively. Ethanol concentrations and yields were higher for the pretreated
textile waste. Possibilities for ethanol production from textile wastes were shown. The use of this ethanol as a fuel may
contribute to reduce environmental pollution.
