Abstract

The determination of oxidative stress in plants exposed to polluted environment is a practice that comes
being developed from decades ago, especially, Allium cepa L. bulbs, has been employed as biological models in the impact
assessment from pollution by means of pro-oxidant and antioxidant markers demonstrating its effectiveness. To
the Cojimar River discharges industrial and domestic wastewaters, this is the cause of the high contamination demonstrated
in previous works into the Genetic Toxicology Laboratory from Biology Faculty, University of Havana. With the
objective of evaluating the levels of oxidative stress in A. cepa roots treated with the water polluted from Cojímar river,
it was measured the total hidropexides (HPT) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (SRATB) as markers of lipid
peroxidation, catalase (CAT) (EC1.11.1.6) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) (EC1.15.1.1) activity, as well as, glutathione
(GSH) and tiolic protein groups (GTP). The concentration of HPT and SRATB were elevated into the sampling point-5,
indicating a high lipid peroxidation. The CAT and SOD activity were low, the same as GSH and GTP concentration,
indicating a high oxidant power toward the Cojimar river outlet. The analysis of the these results showed that the water
samples from this river constitutes a complex mixture able to an unfavourable redox status into organisms exposed, due
to high pollution degree that it presents.
