Abstract

Louis-Nicolas Vauquelin (1763-1829) (Figure 1) is an example of a person that had a disadvantaged youth but a determined spirit and went on to a rich and successful career in science. He was a skillful experimenter that discovered new elements such as chrome and beryllium and isolated many compounds such as asparagines, urea, and tannin derivatives. He performed the analysis of an extraordinary large number of plants and animal tissues and secretions and was considered the best analytical chemist of his time.
