Abstract

Parthenium hysterophorus L. (feverfew) is medicinal plant of antiparasitic traditional use. This action is attributed
to parthenin, active metabolite against the malaria, leishmaniasis and tripanosomiasis; parasitic infections that
affected to more of two billons of people of the underdeveloped countries. Now a day only has not been described in the
recent pharmacopeia, an herbal pharmaceutical ingredient from this plant and has not been developed preformulation
studies from this plant. In the rational design of dosage pharmaceutical forms, it is necessary to carry out, in the first
step, preformulation studies of powder plant, in order to manufacture to industrial level. In the research were carried out
some powder properties of Parthenium hysterophorus L., which are described as unsatisfactory in herbal active pharmaceutical
ingredients in the preformulation step. The residual moisture, its higroscopicity (equilibrium moisture content,
adsorption-desorption), flow properties (repose angle, flow speed, real density, bulk density, porosity, Carr y Hausner index)
were carried out. Taking into account its unsatisfactory technological properties, its inclusion in intermediate forms
(granulates) were evaluated. The powder plant has high content moisture, its lightly hygroscopic and has unsatisfactory
flow properties. The wet granulation is a useful alternative in order to the development of dosage solid forms from the
plant. The powder has technological unsatisfactory properties that can be improved with its inclusions in intermediate
forms (granulates obtained by wet granulation) with satisfactory technological properties.
