Abstract

A new classification of the indirect analytical procedures is presented. lt is based on the proportionality between the measured element signa! and the concentration of the analyte. They are classified in indirect procedures of direct and inverse proportionality. In the inverse indirect analytical procedures the concepts of limit of detection and analytical range are not directly applicable. Starting from this, new concepts derived from the established definitions for the direct analytical procedures are discussed. They are applied to a procedure for the determination of sulphur in silver, by means of the flame atomic absorption spectromctry, measuring the barium signa!. Toe new dcfinitions of direct and invcrse limits of detection are proposed, with a discussion concerning their practica! importance. Also, the direct and inverse analytical ranges are defined. Sorne aspects related to the practica! importance of the detection limits and analytical ranges are discussed.
