Abstract

The mineral gypsum has been used since antiquity. From ancient times. gypsum has coexisted with
mankind, being one of the oldest building materials. Main uses of this material include construction, decoration,
medicine and light industry. The quality of gypsum products, manufactured in other countries with modern
technology has made gypsum to acquire a great value of use, due to its economic production. This paper reviews the
current status of gypsum production in Cuba. The potential of production and development prospects and drawing
comparisons in relation to global production are also analyzed. Forms of exploitation of gypsum mines, production
methods and manufacturing technology products must be modernized for reaching a competitive gypsum industry in
Cuba. This approach will provide quality products for a potential Cuban tourist industry as well as other necessary
productions for health system such as dental and orthopedic plaster casts. A concurrence to the international market
where gypsum and byproducts are greatly requested must be possible thus having a valuable impact on Cuban
economy for contributing to new export items..
