Abstract

A study about atmospheric corrosion deterioration evaluation in reinforced concrete structures was carried out in a coastal zone of Pedernales Canton, Manabí province, Ecuador. Ten structures were selected, located at different distances from the coastline. Different tests such as Compressive Strength, Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity, Resistivity, Corrosion current intensity as an indicator of atmospheric corrosion in reinforcement steel, as well as the Concentration of total and soluble chloride ions, were performed in one column of each structure. The results demonstrated the reinforced concrete quality insufficient used in the building, confirmed by the behavior of the Depth and Carbonation constant values, as well as the Concentrations of total and soluble chloride ion, as a function of distance from the coastline increase where the structures were located. Due to the very high values of Corrosion Current Intensity in the reinforcement steel in the reinforced concrete in the selected column the structures were found in its final or residual service life. On the other hand, according to the comparative statistical analysis from the two methods used in the study the results obtained confirmed that Concentration of soluble chloride ions was the fundamental factor in the origin and development of atmospheric corrosion, despite the concrete used in the column presented a high degree of carbonation. Other factors in concrete that successively influenced the atmospheric corrosion of reinforcement steel were the values of Ultrasonic
