Abstract

Bacteria of the genus Staphylococcus spp. are etiological agents of very severe and diverse infections related to the central nervous system, genitourinary tract, skin, soft tissues, respiratory tract, as well as with conditions such such as otitis, osteomyelitis and arthritis. Currently, the proliferation of bacteria of this genus is multi-resistant to the action of numerous antimicrobial agents such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (SaRM) which it classifies as a “superbug”. This phenomenon has made the need for new antibiotics with selective antimicrobial activity against these bacteria urgent. The first β-lactam antibiotic with activity against them introduced on the market was a cephalosporin, called ceftobiprole medocaril and in 2010, a second named ceftaroline fosamyl was approved. Therefore, the search for new Cephalosporins effective against these pathogenic bacteria is a current line of research due to the therapeutic advantages and the safety profile presented by the respective antibiotic family.
