Abstract

The behavior of anaerobic reactors on the basis of microbiological
aspects in solid waste was studied. For these purposes, both the behavior of
various representative trophic groups of the process: glucolitic, sulfate reducing,
methanogenic and the potentiality as specific methanogenic activity were
considered. The results show that chemical pretreatment, followed by later
digestion provides the best substrate for biodegradation. Alternative thermal
pretreatment of solid waste should be avoided if the later treatment were a
digestion process of 10 d hydraulic retention time. Moreover, the decrease of
microorganism counts in the thermal digester seems to be a consequence of
limitations in the internal diffusion through layers of microorganisms forming
the biomass. The strong correlation found between the Specific Methanogenic
Activity and microorganism counting through the Most Probable Number
technique can be explained by the pattern: Log MPN = 36.1878 SMA, where
MPN is the most probable number of microorganisms and SMA the specific
methanogenic activity.
